Wet Crawl Space
Excess moisture in the crawl space caused the fiberglass insulation to sag and fall, contributing to persistent musty odors throughout the home. Recognizing that a stable, healthy foundation is essential to the integrity of their addition, the homeowners sought a long‑term, reliable solution to address the underlying issues and protect their property.
Crawl Space Drainage Matting and Wall Insulation
SilverGlo® rigid foam insulation panels were installed along the interior foundation walls to improve thermal performance within the crawl space. Unlike traditional fiberglass insulation, SilverGlo is engineered to resist moisture absorption and inhibit mold growth, ensuring long‑term durability in a damp environment. With an R‑11 thermal rating, it significantly enhances the home's overall energy efficiency. To further protect the space, drainage matting was laid across the soil floor. This high‑strength material creates a separation layer between the earth and the home, reducing direct moisture transfer. Its raised dimple design promotes controlled water movement, preventing pooling on uneven surfaces and directing moisture back into the ground for improved drainage management.
Crawl Space Floor Insulation
To enhance both insulation and moisture control within the crawl space, TerraBlock® rigid foam insulation was installed over the drainage matting. TerraBlock functions as a dual‑purpose material, providing effective thermal insulation while contributing to the overall encapsulation system. Its durable, cushioned design creates a protective layer above the soil, increasing the resilience of the crawl space system and improving long‑term performance.
Rim Joist Insulation
To improve the crawl space's overall thermal performance, closed‑cell polyurethane spray foam was applied to the rim joists. Rim joist insulation is a critical yet frequently overlooked component of building efficiency, as this area is particularly susceptible to air leakage and conductive heat loss. By sealing and insulating these structural cavities, the system significantly reduces energy loss and helps maintain more consistent interior temperatures.
Crawl Space Encapsulation
The CleanSpace® vapor barrier was then installed over the TerraBlock® insulation system to complete the encapsulation process. CleanSpace is a highly durable, reinforced liner designed to fully cover the crawl space floor and extend up the foundation walls, creating a continuous, airtight moisture barrier. By effectively isolating the crawl space from ground humidity, this system helps prevent conditions that contribute to wood rot, mold growth, and musty odors within the home. With the crawl space now properly sealed and protected, the homeowners can move forward with their renovation plans confidently, knowing their project is supported by a clean, dry, and structurally healthy environment.
