Failing Floor Supports
The existing support system was inadequate for the structural loads being carried by the floor framing above the basement. Over time, insufficient support allowed the main beam and floor joists to deflect, resulting in noticeable sagging and excessive floor movement. To restore proper load transfer and improve overall structural performance, a more robust floor stabilization system was required to reinforce the framing and eliminate the bouncy, uneven feel of the floors.
Concrete and Soil Removal for Footings
Sections of the basement slab and underlying soil were excavated to accommodate the installation of engineered concrete footings for the SmartJack® support system. These footings were designed to provide a stable, high-capacity bearing surface, ensuring the SmartJacks could effectively transfer structural loads to the underlying soil while minimizing the potential for future settlement.
Footings with Rebar
High-strength structural concrete was used to construct the footings, providing a durable foundation capable of supporting significant loads. A grid of reinforcing steel (rebar) was embedded within the footings to enhance their tensile strength, improve load distribution, and increase resistance to cracking, resulting in a stronger and more reliable support base for the SmartJack® system.
Leveled Footings
The newly constructed footings were carefully finished and leveled to provide a stable, uniform bearing surface for the SmartJack® support system. After the concrete had fully cured and achieved its designed strength, the SmartJack® assemblies were positioned on the footings and securely anchored in place. This installation method ensures proper load transfer, enhances long-term stability, and provides reliable support for the floor structure above.
Supplemental Beam
To provide uniform support across the floor framing, a supplemental steel beam was installed beneath the affected joists and integrated with the SmartJack® system. This beam allowed the load to be distributed evenly across multiple joists, enabling controlled lifting and stabilization of the floor structure.
SmartJack Completed Installation
As the SmartJacks were adjusted, the sagging floor system was gradually restored toward its intended elevation, improving structural performance and reducing floor deflection.
