Job Stories From Haverhill, MA
Repairing Concrete Patio, Haverhill, MA

This family in Haverhill, MA loved to use their backyard space for relaxing and entertaining throughout the warmer months of the year. With the amount of time they spent out on their concrete patio, they really wanted it to be in good condition for both safety reasons, but also to look nice as well. Over the last couple years, rain water had flowed down through the joints in the surface of the slab and gradually eroded away the soils beneath it. This was slowly causing the patio to sink into the dirt, showing signs of cracking on the surface, and becoming unpleasant to walk on as well.

Tearing out and replacing the entire concrete patio would be a lengthy and expensive process, especially since the patio supported a deck structure above. Seeking out an alternative solution to their problem, the homeowners were thrilled to learn about PolyLevel for lifting and leveling concrete. Our design specialist, Nikki Burke, explained in detail for the homeowner how the process worked and provided them with a complete estimate the day of her inspection.

Our production team arrived on the scheduled day for the repairs, and were successfully able to lift the sunken concrete back up 3 full inches. Slab jacks were used to initially lift the patio and remove any pressure from the concrete, and PolyLevel was injected beneath to fill all the voids and provide permanent stabilization. Once this was completed, NexusPro crack sealant was applied to prevent any future rain water from flowing between the joints and down into the soil below the concrete.

With their patio safe and looking great, the homeowners were thrilled with the results, and have peace of mind knowing their space is also protected against future concerns for years to come.

Sagging Floors in 1950s Home, Haverhill, MA

A homeowner in Haverhill, Massachusetts, moved into their home about a year ago. Since moving into the home they have felt like the floors could fall in at any moment. They reached out to EFS to have them come and inspect their home. Our Design Specialist Dan Gillette met with the homeowners and inspected the floor system in the basement to determine why the floors weren't properly stabilized. During his inspection, Dan found that supports in the basement were temp supports that we unable to hold the weight of the floor system. Dan recommended installing SmartJacks into the basement to replace the old temporary posts to stabilize the floor system.

Our Installation Team led by Edward N. began by chipping out a small section of concrete so we could install the footing for each SmartJack. After the footings were installed and leveled the team then cut our galvanized steel supports to size. The team left a couple of inches below the beam so we could install the correct top bracket. The team installed 3 SmartJacks under the main beam, to secure them to the beam we used an adjustable bracket that will secured right into the wood. The other bracket we used was a U bracket and that allowed us to use a supplemental beam to stabilize the floor system in areas where there isn't a beam. After the team installed our 3 SmartJacks under the main beam and our other SmartJack with a Supplemental beam next to the staircase, we tightened the adjustable bracket to lift up on the floor system. Finally, the team mixed up concrete and poured the concrete over the footings to lock them into place.

The homeowners were very happy with the installation of the SmartJacks. They stabilized the floor system and will prevent further sagging of their floors.

Wheelchair Access has Settled, Haverhill, MA

The owner of this building in Haverhill, Massachusetts, constructed this building for people with brain injuries. Most of the people that use the building are in wheelchairs. The owner made sure the building was wheelchair accessible but has seen over the last couple of months that the concrete outside the building has settled a bit. The owner has found that getting their people with wheelchairs into the building has become more difficult with this settlement issue. The owner decided to call EFS to find a solution to their problem. Our Design Specialist Kenny inspected the building and he found that some areas of the concrete had sunk around 1" in some places. Kenny recommended injecting PolyLevel under the slab to lift the slab back up to its original position.

Our Installation team began by creating small injection port holes in the concrete slab. The team drilled them in a grid pattern so that when we lifted the slab we could lift it more precisely. After the holes were made the team started up the Polyrig and began injecting PolyLevel into each hole to slowly lift each section of concrete. The team double-checked that each slab was level after they finished injecting PolyLevel.

The owner was pleased with the results of the project. The slabs were lifted to their original position and access into the building was now a lot easier for the wheelchairs.

Homeowners Want to Keep Basement Dry, Haverhill, NH

A homeowner in Haverhill, New Hampshire, lives in a home that was built over 100 years ago. The homeowners have lived in the home for the past year and recently noticed water entering the basement. The homeowners would like to find a solution to keep their basement dry and maybe finish it in the future. The homeowners reached out to EFS for a free inspection of their basement. Our Design Specialist Keith inspected the basement and created a solution to stop water from collecting in the basement. Keith recommended installing 40' of WaterGuard, a SuperSump, and an IceGuard to collect any water from the basement and send it outside of the home.

Our Installation team began by chipping out a new basin for our SuperSump and then chipping out 40' of concrete for our WaterGuard. Once all of the concrete was removed the team dug a hole that would fit out the sump pump basin. The team installed the SuperSump into the hole and then began plumbing the system to the exterior of the home. Once the team sent the plumbing to the exterior of the home the team then installed the IceGuard and the exterior drainage line to carry the water away from the home. Once the plumbing was complete, the team then tested the sump pump and then proceeded to start installing the WaterGuard. After everything was done with installing the sump pump the team began installing the WaterGuard on the perimeter of the basement. The team laid the drainage around the perimeter of the basement and connected it to the SuperSump. Once everything was connected the team performed a water test to make sure the system was working properly. After the water test, the team lastly mixed up concrete and poured it around the cover of the SuperSump basin and over the WaterGuard to lock them in place.

The homeowner was very pleased with the installation of their new perimeter drainage system in the basement of their 100-year-old home. The system has given them the confidence to start seriously considering finishing the basement.

Front Stair Replacement, Haverhill, MA

The owner of a rental property in Haverhill, Massachusetts, has owned the building since 2017. For the past 5 years, the owner and the tenants have seen the stairs at the front of the building continuously deteriorating. The owner would like to have them replaced so they reached out to EFS for a free inspection. Our Design Specialist looked at the stairs at the front of the building and recommended replacing them with another set of precast steps. The Design Specialist noted the dimension of the current set of stairs and put in an order for a new set.

Our installation team began by coordinating delivery with the company that makes the stairs. Our team arrived at the rental property and removed the stairs and installed a new base before the delivery truck arrived with the new stairs. The delivery truck helped the team place the stairs on the bases. The team made sure to level the stair and then finish by installing the railings to the steps.

The owner and tenants were very pleased with the results of the project.

Cracks in Stone Foundation Wall, Haverhill, MA

A homeowner in Haverhill, Massachusetts, lives in a home built in the early 1900s. They have lived in this home for the past 7 years and recently noticed a couple of cracks in the stone foundation wall. The homeowners plan on staying in this home for only the next 5 years or so before they sell the home. They wanted to repair the home before the problem could get worse so they contacted an inspector to come and look at the cracks and they recommended seeking help from a foundation company. The homeowners decided to call EFS for a free inspection of their stone foundation wall. Our Design Specialist Kenny recommended installing an Auxiliary wall over the stone wall foundation.

Our production team arrived at the home and began installing rebar and PowerBraces onto the foundation wall with the cracks. Approximately every 5' the team installed a PowerBrace and then bridged rebar to connect them. After all the braces and rebar were installed the team then started setting up the forms so we could pour concrete again the wall and create the Auxiliary wall. The team called in a concrete truck to aid with pouring concrete between the walls and the forms. The team braced the forms and filled the concrete up to a certain point before smoothing out the top and then letting the concrete start the curing process. Once the curing process was complete the team returned to the home and removed the forms. They removed each panel and chipped off any imperfections in the concrete until everything was perfect.

The homeowners were happy with their new Auxiliary wall. Now they don't have to worry about the cracks in their foundation walls.

Replace Old Temporary Posts In Crawlspace, Haverhill, MA

A homeowner in Haverhill, Massachusetts, had purchased their home in mid-2021. During an inspection, the homeowners were made aware that there were temporary posts being used as permanent supports in their crawlspace. The inspection recommended finding a more permanent solution. The homeowners decided to call EFS for a free inspection, and our Design Specialist recommended installing SmartJacks to replace those temporary posts and installing a Triplesafe and IceGuard to help with the drainage of their crawlspace.

Our team began by removing the temporary post and then installing the SmartJacks. Next, they installed our TripleSafe into the lowest corner of the crawlspace to collect any water that entered the crawlspace. The team then plumbed the sump to the exterior of the home and connected it to an IceGuard and a drainage line.

The homeowner was very happy with the results of the project.

Cracking In Garage Floor Causing Concern, Haverhill, MA

A homeowner in Haverhill, Massachusetts, has been contemplating staying in their home or selling it. They have lived in the home since 1999 and have seen a crack in the garage become larger and larger over the past 10 years. The homeowner decided they wanted to repair the crack no matter if they plan to stay in the home or sell the home. So they called EFS for a free inspection and our Design Specialist John recommended installing Geolocks to the rear of their garage to add support.

Our production team arrived and began chipping out a wide trench in the garage so they could install the Geolocks. The back wall of the garage had begun to bow and was causing the concrete in the garage to begin to crack. The team was going to use Geolocks and the dirt under the slab in the garage to add stability and straighten the rear foundation wall. Once the team chipped out the concrete in the garage and dug down a couple of feet the team then moved to the rear of the garage to then send a galvanized rod through the rear wall and into the trench. The team spanned the rods across the rear foundation wall and ensured they were all pushed to the trench. Once in the trench, the team secured Geolock Plate to either side of the rod. Once secured the team used the threaded galvanized rod to pressurize the Geolocks by using the soil from beneath the garage slab. The team monitored the wall as they tightened it to make sure the wall was straight. After the team backfilled the trench and then poured concrete over the trench to match the concrete in the garage. After everything was tightened the team installed covers over the plates on the exterior of the home to hide the galvanized Geolock Plates.

The homeowner was very impressed with the solution that EFS provided and executed.

Homeowners Fearful of Radon In Basement, Haverhill, MA

A homeowner in, Haverhill, Massachusetts, had a half-finished basement in their home that they would never use because of the fear of radon gas. The homeowners have only lived in the home for 4 years and since they purchased the home they haven't been able to use the basement for fear of radon. They know that the levels in the basement were 4 pCi/L. The homeowner decided to call EFS for a free inspection, and our design specialist recommended installing a radon mitigation system and a dehumidifier in their basement. The specialist recommended the dehumidifier because the relative humidity was 65% at the time of inspection.

Our production team began by creating an extraction point in the basement to collect radon gas from beneath the home. The team used a core drill to create the hole. After the extraction point was made the team fitted a PVC pipe to the extraction point and ran that pipe toward the exterior of the home. The team ran the pipe to the exterior of the home and installed the radon fan to the PVC pipe so the fan can draw up the radon-filled air from beneath the home. After the radon fan was installed the team then installed the SaniDry dehumidifier in the basement to reduce the relative humidity in the basement.

The homeowners were happy with the results of the project. EFS was able to install a radon mitigation system and a SaniDry System in the basement to lower the radon and moisture levels in the basement. The homeowners now feel comfortable about spending time in their basement.

Replace Support Posts Under Sunroom, Haverhill, MA

A homeowner in Haverhill, Massachusetts, had been living in their home since the late '90s. About 10 years ago they noticed that the post supporting their sunroom addition was sinking. They decided to call EFS for a free inspection and our design specialist recommended installing Helical Piers under the Sunroom.

Our production team began by removing the old sinking posts and setting up temporary posts so we could install the new Helical Piers. After the temporary posts were installed the team began installing the Helical Piers underneath the sunroom. The team used a hydraulic drive head to force the Helical Piers down into the ground until they reach high enough pressure to hold up the sunroom. Once the Helical Piers were pressurized to the correct PSI, the team then attached a bracket to the Helical Pier that allows for wooden support to be attached to the bracket. The team then attached the wooden support to the bottom of the sunroom and then to the bracket attached to the Helical Pier.

The homeowners were very pleased with the installation of the Helical Piers under their sunroom.

Radon Exposure Concerns, Haverhill, MA

This homeowner in Haverhill, Massachusetts, had concerns with radon in their home. The homeowner had plans to stay in this home long-term so they wanted to address any issues head-on. One of the reasons the homeowners are looking into having radon mitigation installed is that one of their neighbors was diagnosed with cancer and they believed it is because of radon exposure. The homeowner wanted to protect their family from radon, so our design specialist recommended installing a radon mitigation system in the home. The basement had cracks that could let in radon from the ground so our design specialist also recommended sealing the cracks in the basement to prevent radon from seeping into the basement.

Our radon crew installed a radon mitigation system into the home. They first started by chipping a hole in the basement slab to install the radon pipe. The team guided the PVC pipe through the wall of the home to then have it connected to the radon fan. The team installed the radon fan with the radon pipe connected to it and then vented the PVC over the roofline of the home. After the radon system was installed, the team sealed all of the cracks in the basement with NexusPro.

The team sealed the basement so that no radon could seep into the basement and the team made sure that the radon mitigation system was collecting radon-filled air. The homeowner was relieved that they didn't have to worry about radon in their home anymore.

EZ Post Helical Pier Patio Room Installation, Haverhill, MA

This homeowner in Haverhill, Massachusets wanted to install a 3-season patio room onto a second floor. They called BetterLiving Sunrooms of NH for them to come out to the home and talk about what they wanted to be built. BetterLiving came out to the home and measured everything they needed. When BetterLiving came back to start the project they decided to use helical piers instead of concrete piers to support the vertical beams. Helical piers are a great alternative to concrete piers. A great benefit of helical piers is that they take half the time to install compared to concrete piers. In this case, under the patio room was a gravel patio and the helical piers were the least invasive but most effective option. If the crew had used the concrete piers they would have had to dig up some of the homeowner's patio. After all the piers are set they can start building the sunroom. The room above was a 10' x 12' 3-season patio room.

The homeowners were very happy with how their 3-season patio room turned out. They were especially happy that no damage was done to the patio underneath the patio room.
