Job Stories From Newburyport, MA
Deck Pier Installation, Newburyport, MA

A homeowner in Newburyport, Massachusetts, purchased a house and wanted to create a large deck at the back of the home. They began by removing the rear addition and deck and then called EFS to install Helical Deck Piers to support the new deck. George Gouthier, our Design Specialist, examined the backyard and recommended installing 16 Helical Deck Piers.

Our installation team arrived on-site and installed each pier using a hydraulic drive head to spin the helical into place. Once each pier was in the correct position and screwed into place at the correct pressure, the team cut the piers to the correct height so that they could install porch brackets.

After all 16 piers were installed and cut, the installation team did a walkthrough with the homeowner and answered any questions they had.

Finished Basement Leaking, Newburyport, MA

A homeowner in Newburyport, Massachusetts, purchased their home 6 years ago and this past spring they had seen their first sign of water entering their finished basement. Since then they have seen the issue reoccur a few more times. To find a solution to the problem the homeowners decided to call EFS for a free inspection of their basement.

Our Design Specialist met with the homeowners and looked in the basement. After the inspection, the specialist recommended installing a SuperSump, IceGuard, WaterGuard, and TrenchDrain into the basement. This will collect the water and pump it out of the basement before it can collect on the floors of the finished basement.

Our installation team led by Anthony LoCascio began by chipping out concrete along the perimeter of the basement. Along the perimeter of the basement, we installed our SuperSump, TrenchDrain, and WaterGuard. The drainage will collect water that threatens to enter the basement and send it toward the sump pump. The sump pump basin will be connected to the drainage and the basin will collect the water until the pump can push the water out of the basement and away from the foundation wall. To make sure the water is guided away from the foundation wall we installed our IceGuard and Exterior Drainage Line on the exterior of the home.

After the system was tested we mixed up concrete and covered the perimeter drainage with concrete and then poured more concrete around the basin of the sump pump to lock everything into place. After the concrete was cured, the homeowner was able to refinish the walls and get their finished basement back with peace of mind that no water could damage it again.

Lower Radon Levels in Basement, Newburyport, MA

A homeowner in Newburyport, Massachusetts has lived in their home for the past 20 years. They often work in the basement and have recently experienced sickness and coughing. Concerned about the radon levels in their basement, they contacted EFS for testing. We responded by dispatching our Design Specialist, Jared Pavlivcik, to perform a Continuous Radon Monitor (CRM) test on the home for 48 hours. The test aimed to determine the average levels of radon in the basement and mitigate any potential health risks.

Upon completion of the test, Jared returned with the results to discuss potential mitigation options with the homeowners. The test showed that the radon levels were an average of 7.7 pCi/L, which is higher than the recommended range. Jared recommended that a radon mitigation system be installed in the home with two extraction points to prevent radon seepage. Additionally, a custom sump pump lid was to be installed to prevent radon from seeping up through the sump pump basin.

Steve Dumais and our installation team began the installation process by creating two extraction points into the basement slab. The team made a 3" hole into the slab to attach a PVC pipe to the extraction point. The two extraction points were then linked and fed up into the attic, where we activated the passive system. Inside the attic, we installed a radon fan to draw up radon-filled air through the system and push it out and above the home. Lastly, the team installed a custom radon sump pit cover over the existing sump pump basin to prevent radon from seeping into the basement.

Our radon mitigation system significantly reduced the radon levels in the basement below the recommended amount. The homeowners were very pleased with the results of the project and can now continue working in the basement without any health concerns.

Groundwater Seeping into Basement, Newburyport, MA

This homeowner in Newburyport, Massachusetts, built their home in 1995, and shortly after moving in they started to see groundwater collecting on the basement floor. When the home was built a sump pump was installed but it had a difficult time keeping up with the water coming into the basement. After dealing with water coming into their basement for the past 25 years they decided they wanted the problem looked at and repaired. They called EFS for a free inspection and our Design Specialist Keith Soper recommended installing a full perimeter drainage system and crack sealing to prevent water from collecting into the basement.

Our team, led by Gunter Billhardt, began by chipping out the perimeter of the basement and installing 150' of WaterGuard and our TripleSafe sump pump. We then plumbed the sump pump to the exterior of the home where we attached two IceGuards and a 10' Exterior Drainage Line to carry water away from the foundation of the home. Next, the team installed FlexiSpan over the vertical cracks on the foundation wall and integrated the FlexiSpan in with the WaterGuard. This will allow any water that travels through the crack will travel through to the WaterGuard and then to the sump pump. After everything was installed the team then mixed up concrete and poured it over the WaterGuard and then around the TripleSafe to lock them into place.

Replacing Brick Columns in Basement, Newburyport, MA

A resident of Newburyport, Massachusetts has been living in their 1850s home since 2021. During the home inspection, the inspector noticed that the brick columns in the basement were causing the floor system to sag. Although the homeowner did not immediately address the issue, they contacted EFS for a free inspection and our Design Specialist, Kenny Calabrese, assessed the situation. Kenny recommended that the brick columns be replaced with three SmartJacks to provide adequate support for the floor system.

Steve Dumais and his installation team began by erecting temporary posts around the basement to remove the brick columns. Next, they chipped away at the concrete slab to install footings for the SmartJacks. The team then measured and cut the SmartJacks and secured them to the floor system with our adjustable top bracket. Finally, they poured concrete over the footings to secure the system in place.

The homeowner was delighted with the outcome, as they no longer need to worry about the stability of their home's floor system.

Adding Water Proofing and Concrete to Basement, Newburyport, MA

This homeowner in Newburyport, Massachusetts, had just purchased a home that was built in the 1700s. The homeowners planned on doing a lot of renovation and the first one was to install waterproofing and a new concrete floor to the basement to make a workshop. The homeowner called EFS for a free inspection and our Design Specialist Kenny created a solution based on what the homeowner wants and needs. Kenny recommended installing PreSlab WaterGuard, SuperSump, IceGuard, and then pouring a new concrete slab.

Our installation team began by demolishing the current concrete slab and trucking away the debris. Then the team installed 60' of PreSlab WaterGuard and our SuperSump into the basement. The team then plumbed the sump pump to the exterior of the home and then attached an IceGuard and an Exterior Drainage Line to carry the water away from the foundation of the home. Next, the team called a concrete truck to pump concrete into the basement to make the slab. The team had to wait a few days for the concrete to cure and then they tested the system to make sure everything worked and did a walkthrough with the homeowners.

Radon Mitigation System, Newburyport, MA

A homeowner in Newburyport, Massachusetts, has lived in their home for the past 6 years and out of the blue decided to have their home tested for radon. They purchased a home radon test and the results were between 6-8 pCi/L. When the homeowner saw the results of the test and looked up what healthy levels were in a home they decided they would need a professional's opinion. They called EFS for a free inspection and our design specialist recommended installing a radon mitigation system.

Our production team began by creating an extraction point in the basement slab to extract radon from beneath the home. After the extraction point was made the team then attached the PVC pipe to the extraction point and ran the PVC pipe to the exterior of the home. Once at the exterior, the team installed the radon fan and connected it to the PVC pipe, and vented the entire system above the roofline of the home. Once the system was turned on the radon levels were reduced to comfortable levels.

The homeowners were very pleased with the results of the project.
